This is a scene photographed at the Erawan Shrine in downtown Bangkok, Thailand.
Worshipers at the shrine can pay to have one of the birds set free and thus perform a good deed.

Great Shot!

Actually she sells all the birds in a cage for a person to set free. Most Thais will say it's for good luck. It is also referred to as making merit, which is the same thing as performing a good deed. The practice originates from rice farmers gathering up the fish and other water creatures that get trapped in the rice fields after flood waters recede and releasing them in safe waters. Buddhists believe that good deeds will come back to them many times greater, in this life and the next.

Rumor has it the birds are trained to return home, so they can be sold over and over again. In any case, the practice of catching animals so people can release them is a contradiction, as the creatures were never in need of assistance in the first place.
